DVCU Visa Card Travel Warning

For the protection of our members, we regularly monitor debit card activity for unusual transactions. Domestic and international transactions made outside of your resident state may trigger a temporary restriction on your card if we are unaware you are traveling.

To prevent a possible interruption in debit card access, please call 602.375.7300 or 800.579.5051 to have a member services representative add a travel notation on your account.

In addition to the above general safety precaution, DVCU has blocked our debit cards in certain regions due to an extremely high level of fraudulent activity. Please be prepared and carry an alternate payment method when traveling in these areas.

Elderly Abuse Hotline and Website

The hotline makes it easier for senior citizens to report suspected fraud and receive assistance. It will be staffed by a team of committee investigators weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST. The investigators, who have experience with investment scams, identity theft, bogus sweepstakes and lottery schemes, Medicare and Social Security fraud, and a variety of other senior exploitation issues, will directly examine complaints and, if appropriate, refer them to the proper authorities. ID Scanning

Take advantage of Deer Valley Credit Union's ID scanning service. The next time you visit a branch have your driver's license, military ID, passport or other approved form of photo identification scanned into our computer system.

Deer Valley Credit Union's ID scanning service provides all of our valued members with a powerful fraud prevention tool.

With ID Scanning, Deer Valley Credit Union captures a digital image of your driver's license, military ID, passport or other form of approved ID. We then utilize the ID image to support the verification of your identity when you utilize one of our branch locations. Capturing your ID image is one of the most powerful deterrents to check fraud perpetrators available, and we are pleased to offer this value-added service free of charge. We encourage ID scanning to help prevent unauthorized transactions and the unauthorized release of personal information.

Common ID Theft Methods and Scams

Text Messaging Fraud

Fraudsters are finding new ways to lure members into disclosing their personal and financial information. While the style and type of information is constantly evolving, there are phishing scams that continue to affect credit unions and members. These scammers need your personal and financial information to put money into their pockets. Time and again, scammers are successful in identifying and targeting the weakest link to enable this crime.

If you receive a text message, email, or phone call instructing you to input personal information (including debit and credit card information), do not respond. DVCU will never ask you for personal/private information in an unsecured email or via text message. If you are unsure if the text message, email or phone call is legitimate, call DVCU at 602.375.7300 and we will be happy to assist in determining the authenticity of the message.

DVCU does send text alerts when we suspect there is fraud on your account. It is important to note that the text messages we send do not ask you to input your card number, PIN or any other personal information. Full details are available here.

Caller ID Spoofing

Caller ID spoofing is a service that allows a caller to masquerade as someone else by falsifying the number that appears on the recipient's caller ID display. Just as e-mail can make it appear that a message came from any e-mail address the sender chooses, caller ID spoofing can make a call appear to come from any phone number the caller wishes. If you feel that a call from a purported company sounds suspicious, ask the person for their name and department and tell them you will call them back. Then, dial the listed number for the company directly or inquire through directory assistance. If it is indeed a scam, report the activity to the effected company.

Online Fraud

Every day, American consumers receive offers that sound too good to be true. In the past, these offers came through the mail or by telephone. Now the con artists and swindlers have moved online to the Internet . Click here for additional information on the numerous types of online fraud.


As if phishing wasn't enough of a headache, scammers are now resorting to what's being called pharming. These criminals are turning to redirecting domain names so that users will unsuspectingly log onto illegitimate sites under hacker control.


Did you get an e-mail from what appeared to be a legitimate financial institution asking you to confirm your username and password? Did the website look real? If so, delete the e-mail immediately and report it to the proper authorities! That is what's known as a phishing scam, and phishers are getting more and more sophisticated in their approach.


In smishing, an e-mail tries to lure a recipient into giving personal information via SMS, the communications protocol used to send text messages to a wireless device. The member receives a text message via cell phone warning that their bank account has been closed due to suspicious activity. It then tells them they need to call a certain phone number to reactivate the account.

Unsuspecting callers who dial the number provided in the text message will be taken to an automated voice mail box that prompts them to key in their credit card or debit card number, expiration date, and PIN to verify their information.
